Valorisation (SRV):- The theory of Social Role
Valorisation was formulated in 1983 by Dr Wolf
Wolfensberger as the successor to his earlier
formulation of the Principle of Normalization.
Normalisation states that everyone should have
available to them the ordinary patterns of everyday
life that are usual in their culture.
Wolfensberger's most recent (1995) definition of SRV
is: |
| "The application of what
science can tell us about the enablement,
establishment, enhancement, maintenance, and/or
defence of valued social roles for people" |
| This definition recognises that, in
order to improve the lives of disadvantaged and
marginalised devalued people, we need
to create or support socially valued roles. This is
because, when a person holds valued social roles,
they are more likely to have access to the good
things in life. |
