Mission and principles of Foundations Forum
A person becomes perceived as ‘deviant’:-
  • by being different to others
  • in one or more ways
  • that are seen as significant by the ruling sector of society
  • who value these differences negatively
Social Devaluation/Devalued:-
  • Systematic Social Devaluation happens to the person or group who is perceived as deviant
  • They will be subjected to a range of hurtful, discriminatory, rejecting experiences throughout their lives
  • They will be negatively stereotyped and have negative expectations imposed on them
Social Role Valorisation (SRV):- The theory of Social Role Valorisation was formulated in 1983 by Dr Wolf Wolfensberger as the successor to his earlier formulation of the Principle of Normalization. Normalisation states that everyone should have available to them the ordinary patterns of everyday life that are usual in their culture. Wolfensberger's most recent (1995) definition of SRV is:
"The application of what science can tell us about the enablement, establishment, enhancement, maintenance, and/or defence of valued social roles for people"
This definition recognises that, in order to improve the lives of disadvantaged and marginalised devalued people, we need to create or support socially valued roles. This is because, when a person holds valued social roles, they are more likely to have access to the good things in life.
