Mission and principles of Foundations Forum

Foundations Forum runs events for people who are searching for ideals, values and strategies to guide them in their roles in relation to people who have disabilities or impairments which prevent them from pursuing ordinary roles in community life.

Participants have included:

  • People employed in, or on the management committees of human services that provide services to people who are disabled, elderly or mentally ill
  • Friends, families and advocates of people who have disabilities or impairments
  • People with disabilities

SRV Theory Events

SRV Theory events are intended to help people who are involved with people who are devalued to:

  • strengthen, support and confirm their commitment, stand and purpose in respect of individuals who are affected by devaluation
  • gain a deeper understanding of devaluation and its consequences
  • learn the basic principles of Social Role Valorisation (SRV) as a means of addressing those experiences of devaluation
  • become clearer about their personal values in relation to devaluation and personal service to people who are devalued; that is, becoming clearer about what it might take to make life more meaningful for the individuals they provide service to

Key SRV Theory Events are:

  • "Towards a Better Life" - a 2-day event
  • "SRV Theory" - a more in-depth 3-day event

Both involve a lecture format, with some reflective group work or class discussion. They incorporate a detailed examination of SRV Theory and some examination of real life examples in the form of video or a guest speaker.

PASSING* Workshop

The PASSING workshop is for people who have completed a Social Role Valorisation Theory Event offered by an approved training group and wish to further deepen their understanding of SRV and its application in the lives of people who are devalued.

PASSING is an intensive 5-day live-in workshop where participants visit two human services. They spend time with the service users as well as the staff and managers of those services. They then use the PASSING evaluation tool to evaluate, from the point of view of the 'client', the services they have visited.

The four primary goals of the PASSING workshop are to:

  • train participants in the implications of Social Role Valorisation (SRV) to all services
  • enable participants to begin to develop competency in using the PASSING evaluation tool
  • provide a common orientation to the evaluation system
  • begin to identify and train potential raters and leaders for later PASSING training and implementation

Foundations Forum is extremely grateful to the services which volunteer their agencies for the training of PASSING participants. (Note: The PASSING workshop is an introductory event and does not equip participants to be service evaluators.) The PASSING workshop is very demanding, tiring and complex. It is not for the feint hearted. Participants should only attend if they have a real desire to understand better the complex ideas behind SRV and a willingness to learn by submitting themselves to a rigorous and rigid process to examine those ideas.
